Rediscovering Memories with the Holga

I recently unearthed my trusty Holga from the depths of my cupboard. It had been gathering dust for months, and I was excited to give it another go. To my surprise, there was still a film loaded with three frames waiting to be exposed. I had totally forgotten what I had shot prior—talk about a mystery!

So, I decided to make the most of my Yorkshire Dales trip and shot the last three frames there. Keep an eye out for a future post where I’ll be sharing the new film I loaded afterward!

I developed the roll of HP5 using Rodinal 1+100. I went for a semi-stand process—one minute of inversions right at the start and then another ten inversions halfway through at the 30-minute mark. The anticipation of seeing how the photos turned out was almost as exciting as taking them in the first place.

When I hung the film out to dry, it hit me—backtracking through the film. The first seven frames were captured in New Brighton, the next two at the stunning Menai Bridge on Anglesey, and those last three during our beautiful trek through the Yorkshire Dales. Talk about a mix and match roll.

A Journey in the Yorkshire Dales

Recently, my partner (Jan) and I had a delightful getaway in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, a thoughtful early retirement gift from a friend.

The first few images captured in Clapham. Following that, I took some shots in Dent, the quaint village where we stayed in a cozy cottage right in the heart of the village, conveniently located next to The Sun Inn. Of course, we made a couple of visits there for a pint or two!

The last portion of my roll features the magnificent Ribblehead viaduct, an impressive sight along the renowned Settle to Carlisle railway line.

All of these images were captured using my Canonet QL17 and Foma 200 film, which was developed in HC110 for 4 minutes at 20 degrees.

I have been encountering some issues with film scratching lately, though I’m still trying to pinpoint exactly where in the process it’s occurring. If anyone has insights or experiences to share, I’d love to hear them!

Gayle Beck Lodge

Over the years, I have documented the condition of Gayle Beck Lodge through photography. My first image was captured in July 2010, showcasing its state. However, my most recent photo, taken in June 2025, reveals a concerning decline in its condition. The lodge has suffered significantly due to the harsh winters characteristic of the Yorkshire Dales.

Gayle Beck Lodge is a ruined stone structure located on the B6255 road between Ribblehead and Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It was originally built as a small shooting hut, likely in the 19th century, where grouse shooting parties would take refreshments. The lodge is situated about 3 miles north of the junction with the B6479. The lodge has been allowed to fall into disrepair and is now considered derelict.
